We had guests earlier this week and as I readied the house for their stay I came across this delima: what does one put in the bathroom for items or 'supplies' that a guest will need or want during their stay?
I have a small basket in the kids/guest bathroom that is perfect for putting these kinds of items in. I'm just not sure what to put in it!
Back in April when a friend of mine stayed with us for a week I happened to have on hand some small sample packages of shower gel and lotion, so I put them in the basket for her along with a bar of soap (in case she didn't want the shower gel) as well as some wash cloths.
I didn't have anymore girly things to put in the basket this time. But this time was different anyway since it was a couple that was with us. I didn't have much, so I put in an unopened bar of soap along with some lotion and body spray (and wash cloths). Ok, so I guess I did have some girly things! The problem now is that I have a almost new bar of soap in the bathroom that does not look appealing to the next guest. Who wants to use a used bar of soap when staying with someone??? Ewe.
So, I would like some ideas of what I should get for my future guests to use. Fill my little basket with your suggestions and advice!

What a gracious hostess you are!
The only thing I can think of is the sample section at Target. You can find all sorts of small shampoos and soaps. And since they're small, you won't feel bad throwing them out once your guests have gone.
Hope you had fun with your friends!
Deanna....our guests happened to be Ryan's sister and her husband, and we had a great time! While they were here we went to a club (gasp!) and took a salsa dancing lesson...so fun!
Salsa dancing!!!! That's awesome!
I agree with Danana Banana about the mini/travel size toiletries from the grocery store.
Walmart has a similar sample section. (Although I would much rather visit Target!!!)
1. toothbrush
2. toothpaste (my husband's was confiscated last trip - over 3 oz.)
3. some decorator soap (TJMaxx)
4. small inspirational or just fun fiction book
5. small cloth bag that closes containing feminine stuff
6. sunscreen
7. chocolates/mints
8. small pad of paper
9. pen
10. shampoo
11. conditioner
12. lotion
13. mouthwash
14. make-up removing cloths
15. travel package of tissues
16. local magazine
17. personal note from you
18. bottle of water
19. sunglasses
20. blanket
okay, first, just ideas, I know they won't ALL fit in the basket. And the blanket is just because I'm always cold and love an extra blanket as a guest (obviously not in the basket in the bathroom). I'm sure your summer guests will have a blast - bathroom basket or not! Wish I was going to be one :)
You are a gracious hostess! I'm good to make sure there is extra toliet paper and clean towels in the bathroom for them. ;)
I would hit the travel/trial section at the drugstore too.
What a great idea. I'm going to have to steal it when we next have guests. You are a good hostess.
The suggestions above are great. Those little sample-sized things are so cute, who wouldn't love a basket of those greeting them when they come for a stay?
I'm also impressed by the salsa dancing. That sounds so fun! How did you do?
p.s. (long comment) As I caught up on your blog, I saw the post from your friend's wedding and must say you looked so pretty in your fancy dress. What fun!
You've already gotten a ton of great ideas here - my only other suggestions would be some hygiene/first aid things like a nail clipper, first aid ointment and bandages.
We have a basket like that as well, in our guest bathroom. It has the usual suspects (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc...), also q-tips, floss...
Got some great ideas from Jenn!
I love that idea. I will have to try it out next week when we have some company. What would you add if it was going to be a whole big family?
Salsa dancing! How fun!
Whoa....that's a lot of GREAT ideas!!! Thanks guys! My future guests will appreciate your input. The only problem is that I don't have any scheduled visitors!!! So who wants to come??! :)
Wendy...I would think that larger bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotion etc would work for a big visiting family. I think sunscreen would be a must for your basket! :) Do you have one of your McSistas visiting soon????
