Last night as I drove Mae and Caleb home from AWANA we were behind a minivan that had a built-in dvd player. We could see that they were watching a movie and we were trying to figure out which one was playing (I wanted to yell 'hey, turn it up, we can't hear!', but I didn't). Our vehicle does not have a integrated dvd player, instead we bought a portable one and set it up only when we do road trips. This way the kids aren't asking to watch videos all the time and neither are they watching them constantly.
With this in mind, Mae asks the question 'why are some parents fun and others not fun?'. I instantly knew, without asking, which category Ryan and I fall into in Mae's mind. I asked anyway and my hunch was confirmed.
We must be doing something right. Right?

I feel your pain. A couple of weeks ago the family decided Owen was the fun parent and I WAS NOT! I didn't ask, "If I am not the fun parent, what parent am I?" The answer might not have been enjoyable!
I figured I would admit it before I was given the label. In response to the whined "Why can't we (something fun)?" I answer, "Because I am the mean mommy." Better to claim my rightful place as moderator of all things fun, costly, or dangerous I think. So yes, you must be doing something right.
So we kind of regretted not getting the built in ones on the cross country trip to Ohio- they were a pain to hang and hook up on a daily basis. But for the reasons you just mentioned, we're so very glad that we did buy the portables, too! Right on for being the "not fun" parents!
Hey what's that music, it makes me want to get my groove on. Can you picture me right now sitting in front of the mac wiggling my old self in my wooden chair with velvety pjs and red slippers to In the Light? Who said I wasn't fun again?
We are the unfun parents too. A title I wear proudly. :)
