Remember when I posted about getting my first passport? It was like, 2 years ago. I had dreams of traveling with Ryan when he did his usual research trip to Spain with his job, but then the economy tanked and now he doesn't go. And I'm left with an empty passport. *sigh*
But since Ryan has racked up the flyer miles and hotel points, we could go on our own. Maybe. We have a sitter (thanks to Ryan's mother being a teacher and having summers off, and willing to watch our 3 kiddos!!!), and we have the vacation time to do it, now all we need is a destination.
Originally we had thought we'd go someplace in Europe. And I didn't really care where it was, just get me out of this country and stamp my passport! Please? But now our options have dwindled due to the cost of flights going up and consequently the number of flyer miles needed.
At this point we are down to either Brazil (because Ryan has been there and loves it) or Hawaii (it's close enough and we have enough flyer miles).
I'm not so hip to Brazil (much to Ryan's disappointment). I'm not really sure why, but I'm just not. And Hawaii. Well, we've been there (Maui, 13 years ago this summer....can you say honeymoon?) Besides, we'd like to go out of the country. But, Hawaii doesn't really pose the travel risks that Brazil could.
So, we are in a quandary (can you say word of the day?). Where to go, where to go? The possibilities seemed endless. But now they're not. *sigh* What a predicament (that's tomorrows word).
Any suggestions???

I vote for Cabo San Lucas! Like Hawaii with more culture and better food! Although it may not be far enough away for you guys. Otherwise, I also loved Nassau, Bahamas and the Grand Caman. All are a lot easier to get to than Brasil.
Great ideas Dan, thanks! I'll run them by Ryan and see what he says!
Geez!! I WISH I had your problems!! :P
sounds awesome. My favorite vacations were NYC and London! I like to walk the big cities. A lazy beach vacation sounds great too.
We loved Hawaii when we were there last year - so amazing!
I haven't been to the Bahamas or any other island countries for that matter, but that would be fun too.
How about a trip to NYC? See some shows, go shopping and sight seeing?
We spent 2 months in Brazil when we were fairly newly married and I would totally go back (though without kids would be best). Traveling there during our summer would mean it is their winter, so it's not as hot and it's "off season" for hotels, so deals are cheaper. A must-see is Iguacu Falls on the boarder of Argentina and Paraguay - it's amazing! Rio is really beautiful and cool, but feels dangerous. We spent much of our time traveling in the Northeast (Bahia) where Randy served his 2-year mission for our church. It was lovely, the people were lovely, and food was great and cheap. Can you tell we love cheap?
Have fun wherever you go!
My friend, Kendi, asked the same thing a while back and I told her to go to Italy and she went to Germany. You should read her travel journal: http://kendijo.wordpress.com/2009/03/05/travel-journal-day-one/
I think she still had fun.
I still maintain that Italy is the best place to visit (just do your homework as to where to go). In Europe, Italy has the best food, best scenery (Amalfi coast), weather, history (Rome, Pompeii), etc. I also recommend staying in one place long enough to really absorb it (ie. at least a week), and also briefly experiencing some place of interest nearby that's different, just to vary things a bit. If you try to do too much, it's crazy and not worth it.
Not knowing where to go is definitely a good problem to have. Being away from the kids for a couple of weeks...priceless!
