The kids have been in school for three weeks now and I feel that we are in full swing of the school year. The kids are thinking about which after school program they want to do, and I anticipate information to come home any day about school pictures. The only thing lacking is the crispness of Fall air.
This week is going to be a full one, I can tell already. Isabel will start preschool and I will begin helping in Mae's class. Which, by the way, I have a question........I'm not sure how to address my kids teachers. Do I call them by their 'teacher' name, Mrs. SoandSo or by their first name? Any suggestions or advice? I suppose for now I'll stick to the teacher name, but it makes me feel like I'm the one that's in school. I don't know!!!
I also have another question. The other day Caleb came home with a note to all the parents and it stated that there is a student (at least one) in the class that has a peanut allergy and that when bringing treats (birthday cupcakes etc) to class to not bring anything with peanuts. Also, it suggested to not even bring pbj's in their lunches. Now, I totally want to respect the allergy that other kids may have and in no way do I want to be the cause of an allergic episode, but I am at a loss as to what to pack for lunches as pbj's are such a staple. My kids don't care for lunch meat so I'm low on ideas for a replacement for the good ol' pbj. Any suggestions??
Well, as I mentioned, this is going to be a busy week and I still need to get a bucket for Isabel to bring to school (they use buckets instead of backpacks or bags). So I'm off to get my girl a bucket as I rack my brain for a cute way to decorate it.
Hope you, too, have a good week!

Wow - those are some conditions.
1. call the teacher by her school name, unless she asks you call her otherwise.
2. Peanut butter is such a staple - how about cream cheese and jelly - or my kids sometimes just take a cheese sandwhich. What about a bagel instead of a sandwhich.
3. a bucket - that's interesting. I'd love to know how it works. Decorations? Paint pens in the craft dept. You can do name and butterflies or flowers or just polka dots or bugs - limitless. Just copy something from a favorite book.
I say use the teacher's school name, especially if addressing her around the students. But I wouldn't be against calling her by her first name in other conversation once you get to know her.
I like your other commentor's suggestions: cream cheese and jelly, or a bagel and cream cheese. I just read a blog where the mom has been making her own mini-bagel bites, baking them, then sandwiching them together and freezing them for quick pizza sandwiches. You could also look at the lunchables section at your store and see if there is anything in there you could copy at home for pb-free lunches.
Good luck this week!
Crispness? I've got your crisp fall right here. Just be careful in socks on the kitchen floor when the crispness arrives.
Donovan likes crackers & cheese & apple slices. We also like chicken salad spread (canned chicken w/ cream cheese) on bread or crackers.
i agree..call teacher by teacher name, esp since you'll be at school and in front of other kids.
NO PB is a tough rule for those who consider it a staple. my kids like just jam or just honey on a sandwich. They also like plain bread. My mom used to pack cream cheese and raisins as a sandwich for me (but nobody else in the family liked it).
The point of peanut butter is to get protein in them, so trade off for cottage cheese and fruit or cheese sandwiches. Not sure about the sugar content, but I LOVE nutella and it's hazelnut based, so it should be kosher for the other kid's peanut allergies.
Do your kids eat in the classroom together or a cafeteria? Also, find out if the kid is allergic to all nuts or just peanuts. If no other nuts are a problem try almond butter or cashew butter. A little bit higher priced but a nice change if you can't have PB. Trader Joe's has them for a good price. I agree with the comment above though, be careful to get protein back in. String cheese, trail mix with no peanuts, Hard boiled eggs. Left over chicken with dipping sauce perhaps? Meatball subs on mini rolls?
Man, school's got a lot of limitations, huh? A bucket?! (I just saw some cute ones at Babies R Us, actually...)
And we do hummus sandwiches a lot over here.
Let me just say that I would just die if it was suggested that I not bring my kids pb and j's to school. I actually think that's out of line. I understand about the treats, but your own kids sandwiches? That's a bit harsh! I would probably say so, to someone, and for gosh sake tell them not to share their sandwich with anyone! That should be common sense, and the allergic children should be told never to trade sandwiches with anyone else.
I don't know what else to tell you to make, because I always make those, or PB and honey for my kids. Or just plain PB.
OH, if they like cream cheese, you could do bagels. Or plain bagels, since bagels are high in protein, strange enough.
About the teacher...I would just ask her, "What do you want me to call you in the classroom? What's appropriate, and what do the other parent helpers call you?" Directness.
Ya, Nathan had a note from his class too. Find out if the kids eat in the cafeteria for lunch b/c at our school they have a special section for those with allergies and I can still make pb&j's as long as he eats it a lunch time and not snack time in the class.
I usually call a teacher Mrs/Ms etc. But with my daughter's kindergarden teacher I've known her for years, so I usually call her by her first name.
I've noticed a sign on the front doors of our school asking kids not to bring peanut items. My son survives on pb and honey. Since the child is in kindergarten and 2nd graders eat later, I haven't really worried about it. My son is now starting to eat lunchmeat on croissants (sp?), which I have sent several times now.

Wow! I wouldn't be happy bout that PB rule. On our plane ride to WA the flight attendant said we couldn't have any pb crackers (the airline had them on board) because a lady-a LADY- was allergic! I could not believe it. Suggestions sounded good! Hot dogs? cheese sticks? They don't have to have an actual sandwich.
